背景簡介
自身免疫抗體是機體在非正常狀態下，由機體自身免疫系統分泌的針對機體自身蛋白的抗體。比如：系統性紅斑性狼瘡疾病產生的抗體。自身抗體產生的原因有很多，具體機理還有待研究。多數學者認為：一些自身抗體的產生是由于遺傳因素和環境因素共同作用的結果，比如：一些病毒性疾病或長期在處于有毒化學毒素下，都可以導致自身免疫疾病。自身免疫疾病源與機體對自身體內或組織產生免疫應答。換句話說，免疫系統將機體自身的物質誤認為病原。這主要局限于一些特定組織：（比如：甲狀腺）。自身免疫疾病的治療主要依賴于免疫調節藥物用于降低免疫應答。
自身免疫疾病對機體的傷害程度取決于自身抗體作用的的器官或組織和器官特異性的自身抗體導致的紊亂程度。那些只對單一器官作用自身抗體導致的自身免疫疾病很容易發現，因為這類疾病常常伴有系統的病癥。比如：甲狀腺機能亢進和橋本氏甲狀腺炎。由自身免疫抗體導致的系統性功能紊亂，往往很不易被察覺。自身抗體可通過ELISA 方法檢測。患者可能有針對不同抗原的自身抗體。用于自身免疫疾病研究的動物模型有很多。已經發現的：18個自身免疫基因簇中有9個基因簇與相應的動物模型在序列上高度保守。動物模型被廣泛應用于人自身免疫疾病的研究，包括：多發性硬化癥、糖尿病、風濕性關節炎、系統性紅斑狼瘡。通過人為誘導、自然的以及遺傳操作的各種動物模型被用于研究自身免疫疾病和相應的藥物研究。
美國Alpha Diagnostic International公司擁有用于檢測不同種屬的自身免疫抗體的ELISA 檢測試劑盒，包括：小鼠、大鼠、猴及人。
